ATPL

LOE 1

First failure, confirm cancel. Try to mention no STBY fuel pump light comes on the L/R side, secondary failure of the engine.

  • Identify failure
  • Memory items
  • Check performance
    • Speed coming back, set MCP
    • Tracking, terrain, time, temp, PAN (request descent 8,000ft)
    • Seatbelt, dome light ON
  • Circuit breakers - check
  • Emergency cover checklist - engine failure

  • Weather (Orange, Bathurst, Sydney)
  • Tracking
    • Direct Orange EE (better straight in approach for OEI, grid LSALT is 5,900 so well above at 8)
    • Setup hold

  • Brief hold, discuss if we get engine start, we wanna do an unrestricted outbound leg.

    Min 170kts in icing

  • TOC fuel check

After Shutdown CX

  • ENGINE RESTART - talk about fuel pumps (consider handing over to FO as captain does engine starts and is most familiar with procedure)

  • Take stock

  • At this point, HAND OVER
  • COMMUNICATIONS

    • FA (press CALL button, flip cabin secure card to red):
    FA Briefing
    • Had an engine failure on the Captains/FO side of the aircraft
    • Our intended plan is to continue on to orange, where we will attempt to restart the failed engine and carry out a normal approach and landing, and our estimated flight time is 25 minutes
    • As such, I'm happy for you to conduct normal cabin preparation, and you should have about ten minutes to complete this
    • Let's keep the passengers in their current seating arrangement
    • Starting the engine, couple of things may occur
      • Lights may go out and the emergency lights will come on,
      • The aircraft may shift around, and make loud noises
      • This perfectly normal and I'll brief this to the passengers as well
    • Repeat that back to me

    Image title

    • Pax
    Pax Briefing
    • Due to a system malfunction we have shut down the L/R engine
    • We are now tracking directly to Orange, and our estimated flight time is 25 minutes.
    • Enroute, we intend on restarting the shut down engine, and then conducting a normal landing into Orange. This is a very safe procedure, one we have practiced many hundreds of times, but it's worth mentioning that during the start the cabin lights may go out and emergency lights come on. This is perfectly normal and nothing to be alarmed about.

    Image title

    • Company
      • Explain flameout, intentions to restart, landing in approx 25 min
  • Take stock (FUEL), check how FO is going

  • Before engine restart:

    • Identify main pump failure

      • No memory items
      • Performance considerd
      • Circuit breakers already checked
      • Call for abnormal checklist - main pump light on (A4-1)

        • Mention that X-Feed and Con Valve will need to be on for the rest of the flight

        Image title

    • ATC - Request unrestricted outbound leg, transponder will drop offline, no comms 5 mins

  • Run through checklist to see what will happen and crew know what to expect:

    • Hand flying
    • Will get CONFIG warning due loss of Rad Alt
    • Engine oil CWP
    • Yawing motion
    • wait 2 min before BLDs
  • Run Engine Restart Checklist (A8-6)
    • DO NOT FORGET TIMING BEFORE START SWITCH L/R
    • When the GEN is reset, turn the FMS back on, then re-engage AP (reselect NAV) when able
    • Reset PRPM and Tq to maintain 180kts (45-50%, CL MIN)
    • When unfeathering, ENSURE YOU BRING CL SLOWLY TO UNF! Allow prop to stabilise before MIN-MAX range, otherwise bad things will happen

  • Once Engine started:
    • Comms
      • FA / PAX
      • ATC - downgrade pan
      • Weather
    • BRACED5QLS
      • Run through each item
      • Don't forget weather, approach checklist, landing lights, SCANS
    • Speeds and figures as normal, +10 ICE

LOE 2

  • In briefing:
    • YBTH - 082° 27nm
    • EAI off on takeoff, but will get it on quickly after so +10 VENR
  • Standard EFATO, follow CDP
  • Once turning onto 114°, set APA to 6100
  • Keep scan on temp, when required "EAI On, Boots continuous, hold the HP until setting MCP"
  • Try to get Master warnings canceled, PAN call out
  • ACCEL ALT - accelerate to VENR +10 due ice
  • When setting MCP, confirm correct ice config (HP)
  • Bring BTH forward on NDB
