Route Manual
Company Port Recency
CASR 121.515 - need sufficient knowledge of route / port to be flown
- Need to be deemed competent by pilot who is qualified by that route,
- Must have operated that route w/i preceding 12 months as a member of operating crew in any class of operation,
- Need adequate knowledge of route, aerodromes used, and alternate aerodromes, including:
- Terrain, MSA,
- Seasonal meteorological conditions,
- Facilities (met, comms, ATS facilities, services, procedures),
- Search and rescue procedures
- Nav facilities
- Demonstrate by flight / sim proficient in approach systems
- Pilot has qualifications (if any) needed to operate that route with regard to special difficulties
Note
The port / route recency requirements are not required when diverting. However, where nominated solely as an alternate, crew must study briefing material in Route Manual within 14 days before flight
Briefing Criteria
RO.245 - route and aerodrome qualification
Only check / training captains, or crew current on the route / port as authorised by training checking manager, chief pilot, type standards, are authorised to conduct route / port certification
Route / Airport Classification
| Level | Requirement | Validity Period |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | No check | Never Expires |
| 2 | Verbal briefing / CBT | Initial qualification 14 days, re-qualification 35 days |
| 3 | PIC must operate as observer, or under supervision of route qualified checking / training captain, or undertake instruction in FFS that uses high fidelity database appropriate to the aerodrome | 12 months from date PIC last operated on route / aerodrome |
When new route / airport is added to the network, flight ops engineering department determine suitability of aerodrome. They conduct performance analysis of runways / terrain, technical issues of operational relevance, may also get info from pilot body (mainly senior captains and checking / training personnel).

Use of Alternates
Alternate fuel is based on GS of 240kts and 3 min allowance for climb, plus 25kg manoeuvering fuel. May need additional traffic / wx holding, weather, enroute winds (in excess of 30hts), approach and landing fuel.
Use of QNH from AWIS
Agent may pass on info, can use as actual QNH. May not relay personal assessment of conditions
